| When HOTEL FOR DOGS was made into a popular movie, Scholastic republished it and asked me to write two sequels. NEWS FOR DOGS was the first of those. It was a challenge to write a sequel to a book I wrote in 1971 and place it in the 21st Century. In HOTEL, Andi was 10 and Bruce was 12. In NEWS, Andi is 11 and Bruce is 13. So, in real time, the story took place about 6 months after the first story ended, but I had to supply the children with access to today's technology, including computers and cell phones, without making that change too apparent.
In NEWS FOR DOGS, Andi and Bruce and their two best friends publish a newspaper with articles appropriate for dogs to enjoy when their owners read to them. All goes well, until they get inspired to post the paper on the Internet, and Bruce gets carried away with enhancing his photos using Photo Shop. When the dogs they have featured in their articles start disappearing and the owners begin to receive ransom notes, the children realize they have made those dogs targets for dognappers.
This, then ,becomes a wild adventure story, with valiant Aunt Alice starring in her roll as private investigator as she and the children go on a crusade to rescue the dognapped dogs and return them safely to their grieving owners.
I had so much fun writing this story! Personally I think it is better than HOTEL FOR DOGS. But why shouldn't it be? I had 35 years between the first book and the sequel in which to hone my skills as a writer.

| When Andi and Bruce create The Bow Wow News, neither the adventure-loving brother and sister from HOTEL FOR DOGS nor anyone else could have guessed what kind of dog days were ahead of them.
Not one kid in the neighborhood is surprised when the local bully, a nasty kid named Jerry Gordon, gets Bruce in trouble. Jerry may be described as looking like an angel, but he can only fool the adults in the community with his two-faced ways. In order to raise money to fix a problem involving a beloved Red Setter who has seen better days (and suffers at Jerry's abusive hand), Andi and Bruce decide to create their own newspaper.
The result is a homespun affair: Andi serves as the editor; Debbie, her best friend, works as a columnist; Bruce acts as the photographer; and Tim is the publisher, because he has the computer know-how to make The Bow Wow News look like an actual newspaper. Charging 50 cents an issue, the first one sells out immediately. And the whole staff agrees that the entire profit should go to Bruce to pay off his debts for the dog.
However, Andi, Bruce and the gang find that running a newspaper is a difficult and time-consuming job that causes a lot of unforeseen problems. Although there are plenty of dogs to write about and lots of crazy things going on (like Bully Bernstein, a dog who eats in a high chair with his owners at the table every day) to investigate, many dog owners would prefer to live their lives anonymously. Being in The Bow Wow News and the lessons Andi and Bruce learn in the course of running the paper create almost as much calamity that the hotel did.
Much like Lois Duncan's HOTEL FOR DOGS, the compassionate kids make for excellent protagonists. The inclusion of a dognapping plot may seem far-fetched until you read it within the context of the growing storyline. NEWS FOR DOGS has a huge heart, and Duncan's characters aren't afraid to show theirs --- which means young readers will find this an engaging, exciting and thought-provoking tale about both the best and worst instincts that man and man's best friend have to offer.

| Lois Duncan was born in Philadelphia, PA, and grew up in Sarasota, FL.
She knew from early childhood that she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at age 10 and became published at 13. Throughout her high school years she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen.
As an adult, Lois moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she taught magazine writing for the Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico and continued to write for magazines. Over 300 of her articles and stories appeared in such publications as Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest, and for many years she was a contributing editor for Woman's Day.
Lois is the author of over 50 books, ranging from children's picture books to poetry to adult non-fiction, but is best known for her young adult suspense novels, which have received Young Readers Awards in 16 states and three foreign countries. In 1992, Lois was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award, presented by the School Library Journal and the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association for "a distinguished body of adolescent literature." In 2009, she received the Katharine Drexel Award, awarded by the Catholic Library Association "to recognize an outstanding contribution by an individual to the growth of high school and young adult librarianship and literature."
Six of her novels -- SUMMER OF FEAR, KILLING MR. GRIFFIN, GALLOWS HILL, RANSOM, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU and STRANGER WITH MY FACE -- were made-for-TV movies. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and HOTEL FOR DOGS were box office hits.
Although young people are most familiar with Lois Duncan's fictional suspense novels, adults may know her best as the author of WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, the true story of the murder of Kaitlyn Arquette, the youngest of Lois's five children. Kait's heartbreaking story has been featured on such TV shows as Unsolved Mysteries, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael and Inside Edition.
