Overview / 简介:
Gr. 4-6. For 12-year-old Tom, a school misunderstanding becomes an important reminder about honor, and a special puppy tests Tom's moral resolve. Helping Grandpa with his hunting dog business is hard work, but it has its benefits, especially when a pointer puppy, Tad, wins Tom's heart. But Grandpa has promised a breeder the pick of the litter, and afraid he'll lose Tad, Tom is tempted to do something dishonest. Grandpa's attitude toward dishonesty is firm ("The only thing a man has . . . is his word. That and his faith in God"), but Tom finds that doing the right thing isn't easy. Though he's occasionally heavy-handed, Wallace promotes traditional values here, using a first-person narrative delivered by a likeable protagonist. The hunting-for-sport aspect of the story won't appeal to everyone, but the canine care details will intrigue dog lovers, and kids will root for Tom and Tad and appreciate the lesson Tom learns.

From Organization / 国外机构评价:
Grade 4-6 -Although this book is about honor, it often veers off that subject into trivia or handles it too heavy-handedly. It is far more interesting when it focuses on how 12-year-old Tom Nash and his grandfather, who is recuperating from heart surgery, train hunting dogs. And its main conflict doesn't arise until halfway through. The story begins with Tom writing lists of spelling words at the end of the school year because he lied about having them ready to turn in earlier. He goes to soccer camp and helps his mother clean his grandfather's kennel and feed the dogs. He and his parents take a trip to Six Flags where they meet a couple whose daughter is around Tom's age. He makes an awkward attempt at conversation with Angie and they become friends. Finally, halfway through the book, Tom and Grandpa begin to teach the older dogs the finer points of hunting and training the puppies. Tom falls in love with a rare blue-eyed beagle pup that seems the best behaved and most attentive. The problem is that Grandpa has promised the owner of the sire the pick of the litter. Tom shares his worry in a letter to Angie but there is never any real mystery as to what he will do. Wallace uses a first-person narrative but feelings are often told rather than shown. Transitions can also be awkward. Dog books are perennially popular but consider this one only if stock is low and demand high. It's not really the pick of the litter.

Foreign Customer Review / 国外客户评价:
This was a really good book. It was about a young tippicle boy still in elementry school who has feelings about people like teenagers where they hate school, hate there parents, and HOMEWORK!!! Anyway, him and his parents have to take care of his grandfathers dog shelter because he ust had heart surgery and they are selling dogs, but he has a dog that keeps following him so he starts taking care of it like its his own. Someone was calling to see the dog and when he arives the boy takes the dog and hides it. The dog runs off and sees the person looking for a dog, and the little boy starts wimping out. The grandfather sees him and tell the owner its his.
