Gr. 1-2. From the I Am Reading series comes a book that's a bit light on plot but that makes up for it in high spirits and jaunty ink-and-watercolor art. Princess Rosa doesn't like winter. It's dark and cold, and the wind whistles right through the castle. Outside, she can't poke through the ice to feed the fish. So when the royal family gets together for lunch, they try to think of some nice things about winter. Sledding? Yes. Christmas? Yes. And Hoda. At the mention of his name, Hoda the Jester appears at the door to delight the assembled court with his antics. Despite its easy style, this does give children some idea of what life was like in the Middle Ages--for those in the upper classes. And the message about looking at the bright side (even in a foot of snow) is a worthy one. |
