In this follow-up to Daffodil (2004), triplet Daffodil is tired of being mistaken for sisters Violet and Rose—and sick of adults saying they're "such NICE little girls . . . like a bouquet of flowers." A papier-mâché crocodile head Mommy has made in art class sparks Daffodil's imagination and offers an opportunity to be different. Sporting the croc head, yelling "Raa raa raa Chomp chomp chomp," Daffodil exuberantly runs wild and free, imagining trips to Jupiter and crossing oceans. Ultimately, the crocodile head suffers a soggy bathtime mishap, but Daffodil's inner crocodile frolics on as she happily rejoins her sisters in play. Daffodil's words and actions ring kidlike and true, even as they portray her desire to be unique and break free of others' perceptions and expectations. Colorful art, whimsical and expressive, fills pages with fanciful patterns, perspectives, and details, interweaving fantasies amid familiar activities and settings. Rosenfeld, Shelle

This is the second book in Emily Jenkins' delightful series about a headstrong young girl named Daffodil, who asserts her own individuality and resists being typecast as a "good girl" or lumped in along with her identical triplet sisters, Violet and Rose. If you liked the first book, "Daffodil," you'll love this one, too. (ReadThatAgain book reviews) |
