| Kindergarten-Grade 1–Youngsters will be delighted with this story about an enormous dog and the small boy who owns him. The two plan a camping trip, pack some food, and head out to pitch their tent. After it is set up, the child builds a fire for cooking hot dogs (which sets a questionable safety example, to say the least). When it is time for bed, the not-so-tiny pooch attempts to join his friend in the tent, with disastrous results. But misadventures do not diminish the campers' enthusiasm. The illustrations make a significant contribution to the story. The silliness of the dog is made funnier by his exaggerated size. A little bluebird appears in most pictures, adding a reassuring light touch. Although Tiny and his human haul a red wagon full of supplies to their camping area, there are hints along the way that they are not traveling far, and the final page shows that they are in their own backyard. Meister is careful with her word choices, providing repetition and context clues for those that are more difficult. | My 5-year-old was initially drawn to this series of books featuring Tiny the dog because he reminded her of Clifford the Big Red Dog. Tiny is a dog, but unlike his name, he is HUGE. Though the stories do not feature many characters, mainly Tiny and his owner, a young boy, the stories are simple and engaging. In "Tiny Goes Camping", Tiny and his owner decide to go camping, and begin assembling the equipment and materials they'll need. Their antics make this a delightful story and young children will especially relate to the sense of fun and adventure within the story.
The Tiny stories are vividly illustrated in full color which will motivate young children,especially visual learners. The sentences are simple in structure and repetitive which makes this an ideal series for beginning readers (Level 1), and the visual clues provided within the illustrations enable children to figure out words by themselves. The elements of predictability and familiar sight words serve to encourage early readers and keep them interested. My daughter's reading aptitude has improved with books like the Tiny stories! |
