PreSchool-Grade 1—Waddell and Varley take readers on an enjoyable excursion. Old Goat and Turkey—acting like a snappish uncle and a patient grandfather—take Small Pig to the lake, where the youngster expresses an ardent desire that they go rowing. "'Turkeys don't go in boats,' Turkey said. 'Neither do goats,' said Old Goat, but he climbed into the boat, and they rowed off onto Blue Lake." This pattern repeats: Small Pig makes a wish, Turkey responds negatively, and Old Goat patiently indulges him. The sun sets, the moon rises, and Little Pig falls asleep—and oh yes—Turkey falls into the water as Old Goat is mooring the rowboat. While the linear narrative may, for some, raise expectations of a more substantial story, this title succeeds simply as a glimpse into a child's world. Varley's gently colored pen and ink drawings have a touch of Beatrix Potter-style magic, though the use of white background in some of the night scenes is confusing. Despite minor imperfections, Captain Small Pig will entice readers with its droll characterizations and splendid pictures.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY |

Old Goat, picnic basket in hand, was heading down to Blue Lake to have a picnic with Turkey and Small Pig. When they got there, Small Pig spotted a small red rowboat and begged to go for a row. No way did animals like Old Goat and Turkey ever go out in boats, but Small Pig insisted and off they went. Small Pig leaned over the side of the boat, staring into the waters and declared, "I want to fish for whales!" Of course he was told that was an impossibility, but he could dream. Old Goat obliged his fantasy and "tied a string to an oar so Small Pig could try his whale fishing."
Very soon Small Pig caught a whale of an old boot and was quite pleased with himself. Next he wanted to row and while Turkey was against it, Old Goat was all for it. Before you know it, they were rowing round and round and round and round. The "Captain Commander" soon tired of his job and the boat was adrift. Before you know it, the moon was overhead and it was time for the threesome to go back to the dock. All of a sudden the boat began to rock . . . "one way . . . and then the other . . . until . . . "
This charming, gentle story of an impromptu day trip with Small Pig, Old Goat, and Turkey will delight your youngster. Many families have those very special, memorable days that were totally unplanned. Small Pig and crew have one of those memorable days creating memories for them that will last a lifetime. There is nothing overly exciting about the story, but many people will be able to relate to this memory maker. The art work has a lovely fairy tale quality that is very appealing. If you want a quiet tale about a memorable day, this is one book you may wish to add to your list! |
