| Gr. 1-2. This anthology in the Reading Rainbow series features five short sports stories culled from easy readers. Selections from Jean Marzollo's Soccer Sam (1989) and Megan McDonald's Beezy at Bat (1998), among others, appear here with their original illustrations intact. Two short poems by Nikki Grimes and Lee Bennett Hopkins are also included. Anthologizing easy readers is like snipping material from what is a pretty tiny piece of cloth to begin with. A few of the stories hold up fairly well on their own, but others may strike young readers as being like haiku--very brief and somewhat baffling. On the other hand, the very brevity of the stories may appeal to some beginning readers, who will find that reading a few short stories at a time is less daunting than trying to tackle an entire book. |
