| Author Elaine W. Good and illustrator Susie Shenk Wenger have produced four children's picture books on the four seasons of the year, all with a farm setting. This one, of course, is the winter book, and it covers such aspects of the season as cold weather, Christmas presents, baking, winter clothes, sledding, and tracks in the snow. Mrs. Wenger's illustrations all feature confetti-like paint splashes which sometimes add a festive touch and sometimes are an annoying distraction. I found them inappropriate in the pictures of mud season and of lambs but welcome in the scenes with Christmas decorations, cookies, and presents. Some other illustrations that I particularly liked show stars in a winter sky, cows in a barn, and children sledding near two snowmen. Children who read White Wonderful Winter might be inspired to make their own book of drawings of the things they like best about winter. This series can help them to appreciate the different seasons, and the books are fun to read and fun to look at. |
