| Kindergarten-Grade 2-These books introduce a limited number of concepts and terms associated with an occupation and are appropriate for beginning readers. The one or two sentences per page are supported by attractive full- and double-page color photographs of men and women at work, whether it be rounding up cows, putting out fires, or navigating a plane. The "I Can Be" series (Children's) is much better in terms of content, organization, and ethnic representation. Other alternatives include Dee Ready's Fire Fighters (Bridgestone, 1997), Susan Kuklin's Fighting Fires (Bradbury, 1993), and Patricia Lauber's Cowboys and Cattle Ranching (Crowell, 1973; o.p.). Not first purchases. |
