| PreSchool-Grade 1-Van Kampen retells a traditional folktale in a classic manner, but with a few twists. A poor mother goes to the wise fishmonger for advice when her family outgrows its house. His advice is to begin to invite all of their animals into their home, and, predictably, it becomes more and more crowded, and each time the mother comes back for advice, she moans to the fishmonger that "things couldn't be worse!" Yet they always are. The watercolor illustrations become more packed and chaotic as the house becomes more crowded. With all the fluttering of wings and kicking of legs, readers can almost hear the din echoing throughout the cottage. However, simple white backgrounds keep the pages from looking too cluttered. The layout is designed with pre- and beginning readers in mind. The animals are introduced in a rebus manner, and that animal's picture is featured in the text when it moves into the house. The refrain is printed in bold. While available in many other versions, this is a good rendition of the tale.

| I don't know who enjoyed this book more my daughter or me. The lesson is don't complain because your situation could be worse. The story is about a family,including Grandparents, who live in a small house and a wise man suggests that the woman move the farm animals into the house. This was because the woman complained about the lack of space and fighting that was happening in the home. Then the wise man tells the woman to remove all the animals and she was so happy to have the space again. Great story about appreciating what we have. |
