The fox tries and tries, but he can't reach the grapes he wants. What does he do to get them? This Aesop fable may surprise you. |
Foreign Customer Review / 国外客户评价: |
This little "Read-it! Readers" book is a Yellow Level. Yellow level books are supposed to have more challenging ideas, more challenging vocabulary, and a variety of sentences. I would agree with at least two of these: I don't think there is a variety of sentences. In fact, most of them look like the following:
The fox jumped high
and snapped his jaws.
He bit nothing but air.
The fox tried again.
He took a running start
and leaped at the grapes.
And in any case, more of 'this or that' is not a terribly helpful descriptor for moms and other people trying to pick out a new book, so I went and looked up the 'Accelerated Reading' designation. The AR listing for "The Fox and the Grapes" is 1.9, or in other words it is a book essentially on the second grade level.
[1.9 really translates as a book for first graders in their 9th month of school. Since children vary in their accomplishments at this age don't take this number as written in stone. It is however a good way to judge level after you figure our where your child(ren) currently stand on its scale.]
More difficult vocabulary includes: vineyard, hungry, grapevines, juicy, and fruit.
Three Stars. The theme for this version of the Aesop story is best summed up by the final sentences in the book: "The fox knew the grapes were tasty. It made him feel better to pretend they were sour, because he couldn't have them."
Artwork is okay and colorful. Okay Read-aloud. AR level is 1.9. We just read another Mark White book retelling the story of the Ant and the Grasshopper and while this one has a tale that is a little more difficult for the youngest readers to understand, is simpler in regards to sentence structure, vocabulary, and number of sentences.
