PreSchool-Grade 2—This simple yet effective book looks at a village garage through the seasons and its workers' many jobs. In spring, it's clean-up time, as the men and women gather sticks from winter storms, sand from snowplows, and leftover leaves. When summer comes, it's time to patch the potholes and rebuild a bridge washed out by a storm. The workers relax on the Fourth of July, providing hot dogs, fireworks, and free rides on the front-end loader for the townspeople. Fall means leaf collection with the Elephant Truck. Winter brings out the snowplows, and things come full circle as spring returns. Karas's gouache and acrylic illustrations depict a friendly village with winding streets, fruit stands, and quaint shops. This book would be a good choice for discussing how seasons affect occupations, or as part of career and community-helper units.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

Foreign Customer Review / 国外客户评价: |
Employees at the town's public works have their hands full and keep their trucks busy year-round. The spring brings spring cleaning; not closets and rooms, but streets that need to get cleared of sticks, sand, and debris. Summer brings out different equipment necessary for pothole patches and summer storm repairs, while the fall necessitates an enormous elephant truck to suck up all the fallen leaves. Winter, when the public works trucks and employees are perhaps most appreciated by the village residents, calls for snow plows and trucks to salt and sand the roads.
This new book stands apart from the large number of truck books in the market with its focus on the people who operate the trucks and their contributions to the community. The Village Garage serves as a useful and interesting tool for teaching young learners about capital resources, human resources, and public services.
