Kindergarten-Grade 2—Elizabeth Amelia is made of wool, but she is every child. She romps and plays and goes to school. Everyone loves her. When she grows up, she marries James Elmer, a man who "loved wool." They don't have any children, so Elizabeth Amelia takes a stray piece of yarn unraveling from her left foot and starts knitting them. Soon she has four. She keeps unraveling pieces of herself to make clothes and things for her offspring. When she has knitted most of herself away, her husband says, "Elizabeth Amelia….You're nothing but a pillow!'' One of the children then finds a ball of yarn the same color as her mother and saves the day. Elizabeth Amelia soon re-knits all of herself and the family dances together again. The delightful watercolor illustrations resemble folk art, and are detailed and colorful. All of the faces are two-toned, with a line going down the center. Still, seeing Elizabeth's legs disappear and then reappear is just plain creepy. Kids will get a mixed message from this one.—Ieva Bates, Ann Arbor District Library, MI END |

picked this book up because it was about knitting. I was just beginning to teach our daughters to knit and crochet, and thought, "How cute, a book to go along with our crafting!" As I read it in the bookstore, I soon found that the book was more for (or about) me than them. Tears rolled down my face as I read farther into the story. The story is very much the story of so many Mommies. I have passed it around to many that I know and love, and they can see themselves in this book as well. When I finally got the book back from friends, I read it with the girls (age 7). They love the book. They love the knitting. They love Barbara Lavallee's art and the sweet cat that shows up on every page. They love Elizabeth Amelia's bounciness. They love this book and read it on their own often. I can't wait for the day that they can more fully understand the bigger story of this book. As women, we can easily lose ourselves for the sake of others. I need to hold on who I am and who I want to be. I find this book a lovely entree to this discussion at an early age. Someday they may be Mommies too...and they need to know what the risks are. And what a fun way to start that conversation! |
