Overview / 简介: |
Sophie Chalk can make a snake head with her fingers and play a four-person game all on her own. She can even draw a circus that covers her entire wall! But when new neighbors move in next door, Sophie’s not sure she can handle meeting them. Because there’s something different about these new neighbors. . . . It’ll take some courage and a few new tricks to show Sophie that sometimes meeting new people . . . or new monsters . . . isn’t so bad after all.
Richly illustrated and brimming with imagination, Chris Case’s debut is a monstrously good time!

From Organization / 国外机构评价: |
PreSchool-Grade 2—Imaginative Sophie has the limits of her tolerance tested when a family of monsters (complete with tentacles and pointy teeth) moves in next door. She is terrified that they will stuff her into a sack, but her mother insists that she be polite when they come over for dinner. To her delight, she finds that Charlie, the child monster, likes to make rude noises and has magical powers (like the ability to change his tongue to match his napkin and to transform anything into a potato). Sophie responds by showing off her own tricks—making paper-towel parachutes and letting him try on all of her hats. There's a lot of silliness but little substance to this thin tale, but kids will enjoy Charlie's outrageous behavior and the energetic watercolor and gouache cartoons (Sophie's cat turned into a potato is a highlight). They might even get the subtle message buried under the silliness: you don't have to be afraid to meet new people.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD |
