PreS. A small boy, asked what kind of gift he would like, replies that he would like an extraordinary gift?a boat with feet for walking around the world, a donkey with 10 legs, a giant flower, a scary (but not too scary) witch, a castle, etc. In fact, the gift he is presented with contains all of his wishes and then some?a book! His imaginative requests are depicted on fold-out pages on which simple wishes are transformed into wondrous adventures. Flat, cartoon artwork painted in bold colors and outlined with heavy black line is in keeping with the childlike spirit of the text. Not a priority purchase, but okay for additional wish-fulfillment material.?Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, |

Sometimes it's hard to decide what kind of gift you'd like best, even if you're not a 4-year-old boy. In this cheerful, engaging picture book, young Paul compromises by choosing ordinary things that magically turn into extraordinary things. When he asks his mom for a flower he is really asking for "a giant flower that would grow as high as the sky." (The page of flowers folds out into two more pages that show Paul up in the sky clinging to the flower, surrounded by odd-looking birds.) In the end, Paul's mother gives him a book, the ultimate "ordinary thing that magically turns into an extraordinary thing." The colorful full-page illustrations--created by Florence Langlois--are endearingly simple, slightly goofy, and sure to delight early readers. (Ages 3 to 5) |
