| PreSchool-Grade 3-While visiting her grandparents, small, serious Ella becomes bored, so her grandma sends her outside to "find some sunshine inside yourself- even when it's winter," giving her the key to a tiny snow-covered summerhouse in the backyard. Grandpa had built the house many years earlier when he and Grandma first arrived in "this big cold country," to remind them of their "tiny island home." When Ella unlocks the door, realism gives way to flower-strewn fantasy as she discovers warmth, the smell of coconut oil, tropical flowers, and butterflies. In this magical-realism picture book, she even strips off her winter boots and warm clothes to swim. While the now-ebullient Ella cavorts on the beach, more literal-minded preschoolers will wonder if this is really happening, and older children will wonder if she fell asleep and dreamed herself to a warmer place. Neither Russell's bright oil-pastel illustrations nor the story indicates an answer, but Ella returns to her grandparents a happier child and falls asleep on Grandma's lap. Some may see this book as a useful discussion starter about imagination helping us out of the winter doldrums, but active kids may think it's more fun to get out in the snow and actually do something.
