| The little ones for whom this is intended may or may not like bugs (or for that matter know what a bug is exactly), but they sure will like this book. The insects—one dragonfly, two butterflies, etc.—are presented on thick colorful boards with art executed in sprightly collages that have depth and dimension. Best of all are the insects themselves, some with cut-out glittery bodies and others made of soft, touchable material. Use this as a counting book (it only goes up to five, just right for the age group), an introduction to insects, or a fun look-and-touch book that will withstand many readings. | Our son is now 10 months old, and still loves this book. It has been a favorite of his since he started really paying attention to what we were reading to him, maybe 3 or 4 months old. At first he just liked looking at the pictures, but in the past few months he has also enjoyed exploring the textures on each page. I think it will be perfect when he first starts learning his numbers and starts to read. The pictures are colorful, and on each set of pages, the number theme carries throughout the picture. For example, on the page with two butterflies, there are also two houses, each with two windows, two clouds, two flowers, each with two leaves, and each pair of butterfly wings are obviously different from each other pair of wings.
The bugs are: one dragonfly, two butterflies, three beetles, and four bees, with the last page saying "five busy bugs - I like bugs!" The fifth bug is a ladybug. |
