Overview / 简介: |
Though it's not immediately apparent that this is less a picture-book story book than a conceit about writing, older children and young listeners will know something is up: the author addresses them directly, and provides them with a creatively designed list of words to keep an eye (or ear) out for. The lightweight story, punctuated somewhat jarringly by arch asides, revolves around a divorced couple's dispute about the ownership of a pig. Rude, sausage-eating Mr. Harbottle wants to consume his half; kindly Mrs. Harbottle and her two neighbor children don't want their porcine friend to be cut up. The tale isn't as engaging as many of Allan Ahlberg's previous books, nor is it really an instruction manual for new writers (there's nothing about writing plot or developing character). The book is mostly about facility with language, and with an adult's introduction, it can be used to demonstrate fun ways to use words in building a story. This is Jessica Ahlberg's first picture book, and her soft watercolor, pencil, and ink illustrations, on clean, white backgrounds, are charmingly accessible. |

Grade 1-4–A humorous, action-filled tale about a pig divided. Kind Mrs. Harbottle loves Esmeralda but she only owns half of the porker. Her evil husband would like to turn his half into sausages. Now that they are divorced, he sends some thugs to claim the pig. Luckily, the children who live next door give chase and successfully engineer the animal's return. The tale begins with an invitation from the author to read the story ("It is an excellent one in my opinion, but then I would say that, wouldn't I"). Funny footnotes appear throughout. Done in watercolor, colored pencil, and ink, the cartoon illustrations are bright and appealing. The words and pictures are playfully intertwined and mutually supportive. Although the narrative is a bit wordy, the artwork will assist independent readers' understanding of the text.–Phyllis M. Simon, Bay Shore School District, NY

Foreign Customer Review / 国外客户评价: |
A contented little brown pig Esmeralda loves her life - except her divorced owners share custody and each has only half a pig. Can Esmeralda satisfy each owner equally when she is divided in halves? Half A Pig holds plenty of messages for children of divorced parents, without being as obvious as many discussions. |
