PreSchool-Grade 1-Wilf is a little mouse who has a problem with listening. So, "Crash, bang, wallop!"-he's always having accidents. Each time his mother soothes him and gently cleans him up, she says, "I wish you'd listen to me." Wilf's enthusiastic misadventures are illustrated in large ink-and-watercolor paintings that are filled with movement and energy. The characters look like animals but move like people. The artist uses color delicately to create a small and perfect imaginary world brimming with naturalistic flora, where mice live in a pumpkin cottage with a blue front door. Children will readily identify with this dynamic little creature who manages to maintain his good humor after every mishap. They will also enjoy (and join in on) the refrain and find the role reversal at the end very satisfying. This is a great book to read aloud near Mother's Day, although the relationship between mother and son is timeless.-Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City

Parents and young ones will appreciate "Watch Out!". Wilf is an active little mouse that is constantly getting into trouble, not because he is naughty, but is just unable to listen [doesn't that sound familiar?]. Too eager to enjoy himself to the full, and explore as many places as he can, Wilf gets messy, falls down, and stumbles into sticky situations. The illustrations by author-illustrator Jan Fearnley are in full-color and just beautiful. Young children will find this story of a precocious and active little mouse engaging, and something they will be able to relate to. Recommended for ages 4-8. |
