| Talk about internationalism. The author of this lively picture book is Australian; the illustrator is Argentinean; the book, originally written in German, was first published in Switzerland. The subject also crosses geographical boundaries: a little boy is so shy that he cannot play with other children. His companion is his shadow--if only the shadow could talk back. Then one day the boy bravely rescues a young girl's cat from high in a tree, and he and she, with their shadows, have fun together. The large, bright, active pictures, with lots of white space, show the lonely boy on the edge of the fun, his silent silhouette always there, nodding in agreement and racing by his side. | A wonderfully written and illustrated book which really appealed to both my young sons. My 8 year-old loved the book because "the boy was able to overcome his shyness and help someone" and my 5 year-old was so happy that "the boy made a new friend and wasn't alone anymore". This beautifully illustrated book had such a warm message about overcoming shyness - a real obstacle to many children today. I would thoroughly recommend this book, especially for any child suffering from shyness. |
