Overview / 简介: |
It’s morning, and Harry, like many of us, would like to stay in bed just a few minutes longer. But this morning, Harry’s mother wants him to come down to the kitchen right away—she has a surprise for him. But what could it be? Fairy-tale breakfast guests? A dinosaur? Aliens? Maybe an earthquake, a fire, or a flood? What would it take to get this sleepyhead out of bed? Harry imagines one fantastic scene after another until he finally bounds down the stairs, bat in hand, to save the day. |

Grade 1-3-Harry is in bed when his mother calls up to him, explaining that she needs him in the kitchen. While she waits, his overactive imagination conjures up one worrisome scenario after another-a dinosaur asking for a drink of water, a robot asking for him, a flood, etc. The boy finally decides that there is a robber in the kitchen and heroically grabs his baseball bat and runs downstairs, only to discover that the family cat has had kittens. The easy-to-read text is comprised of Harry's imaginings as he lies in bed fearing the worst and his mother's requests that he get up and come into the kitchen. The stylish artwork and the setting provide a 1940s ambience. There is no trace of a microwave or computer, and the highest tech to be seen is the push-button wall phone that seems out of place. The flat, thick colors are reminiscent of books from the era and are similar to those in Marjorie Flack's "Angus" stories. With their skewed perspective, the illustrations seem intentionally awkward. This innovative artwork won't appeal to all children, but the story is timeless. |
