Grade 3-5-- The Bendicks have attempted to simplify two complicated topics, but with limited success. The books are filled with brightly colored illustrations, many of which are full-page or double-paged with boxed inserts of text. Both have a parrot who flys around the pages making silly comments. The discussions jump rapidly from one topic to the next and are limited to two or three sentences in some instances. Unfamiliar terms are italicized and briefly explained, but it is difficult to define simply such terms as cathode-ray tube, laser, phospherescence, electromagnetic wave, and diaphragm. Too many assumptions about prior knowledge will leave many readers baffled. Telephone uses fictitious newspaper headlines as dramatization, but the subheadings are worded poorly and read like incomplete sentences. Television is full of cutesy remarks in parentheses that do not add any substance. Both volumes discuss the height of stationary communication satellites, but give different distances for their orbits. Pass these by, as they are not of the quality of some of the previous titles in the series. --Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS
