In their latest uproarious adventure, four chickens see the world beyond their farm when they climb into the back of a pickup truck, and the farmer unexpectedly drives to town. The birds soon find themselves in a strange world of rushing traffic, honking horns, shouting voices, and lively jazz music from a sidewalk café. The silly, rhyming words (“The chickens blabbered, gabbered, and gibber-jabbered”) make this great for reading aloud, and Cole’s bright ink-and-watercolor cartoon pictures extend the chaotic fun. Kids will feel superior to the naive chickens, even as they recognize the birds’ anxiety about strange, new places. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman |

One chicken spotted a bag a chicken feed in the back of the farmer's red pickup truck. Before you know it, there were four chickens pecking away at the bag of feed trying their darndest to get the bag open so they could have a snack. All of a sudden whoosh! The truck was off and running with the four of them stuck in the back of the truck. There were "four petrified chickens" trying to figure out how they were going to get back home. Their eyes widened out as they began to fret and worry. The four bugged-eyed, "lily-livered chickens shivered and quivered" and knew they were in a pickle.
Their wings flapped and their eyes grew wider as the truck hit some bumps. All of a sudden, the tailgate opened and the four wide-eyed chickens were dumped out and had to figure out how to cross the road. They cackled and clucked as cars honked at them, but they soon managed to cross the road in spite of themselves. The disheveled chickens found themselves at a café checking out the quality of the food when one of them asked, among other questions, "What if we throw up?" as the cuisine looked a tad questionable. Tables began to be upturned, food was flying, and four very "persnickety chickens" were in trouble. How were they ever going to find their way home after they'd seen this crazy city?
This zany, hysterical story of four "lily-livered chickens" who visit the big city will give your youngster a case of the giggles. The latest addition to the "Big Chickens" series delightfully joins their predecessors, "Big Chickens" and "Big Chickens Fly the Coop." This crazy bunch of chickens will not disappoint the reader with their silly antics. The artwork meshes perfectly with the tale, bringing the cackling crew to life in a very amusing way. If you've met these chickens before, you're sure to want to invite them to your house again! |
