This promising if rocky debut lets readers eavesdrop on a class at a world-famous School of Dessertology, where Chef George, an imperious owl instructor, is whipping both egg whites and his hapless anthropomorphized students into shape (What's an ingredient? whispers one student, after the chef unveils a chalkboard with a whirlwind of information for them to absorb). There's a retro-chic sensibility, visual wit and good sense of character in Stein's gray-toned brush-and-ink drawings (a vain poodle is shown weighing herself on a digital scale when George commands, Take the time to measure carefully). But despite these strengths the story falls short. The titular bunny, distinguished by her diligence and rose-hued skin (nearly the only use of color in the book), never emerges as a character worth following. And the story feels more like a series of similar incidents strung together—the common thread being the contrast between the teacher's instructions and the students' incompetence—rather than a truly satisfying narrative arc. Ages 4–8. (Mar.)

I checked this out from the library for my five year old daughter, and she was so sad when it had to go back that I ended up buying it for her. Her father and I loved reading it to her anyway, so we certainly didn't mind. The story is about several students, ranging from a spoonbill to a tiger, in a class at a famous dessert school run by a master pastry chef who happens to be an owl named Chef George. Only one student, the little pink bunny, really listens and gets it all right. The other students end up making messes and creating crazy concoctions like a shoofly pie made out of shoes. The illustrations are so adorable and detailed and funny. We spend a lot of time talking about what's going on in them. I read the part of Chef George with a thick French accent which my daughter finds hilarious. And in addition to being a bedtime favorite, she loves to pull this book out and pretend to make the recipes on the endpapers. She and her dad have made all of the recipes with her play food in her play kitchen. Someday I'd love to actually try to make one of them. Anyway, if you're looking for something a little different and whimsical and like to get silly, I highly recommend this one. |
