Wendel, a hardworking inventor mouse, sometimes invents so much he forgets to sleep, and whenever a doodad doesn’t work, he just tosses it aside. To handle the scrap heap, he invents a robot, names it Clunk, and sets it to work tidying up. But when Clunk makes a few mistakes, Wendel sends the robot to the junk pile and invents a bigger, badder cleaning robot, the Wendelbot. This one goes on a psycho cleaning jag and whisks Wendel right out of his workshop. Reunited with Clunk, Wendel invents an army of messy-minded robots to blow a gasket in the Wendelbot. In the end, Wendel learns that broken things demand mending, not trashing. Riddell fuses a gently twisted sensibility with his trademark finely wrought pen work and displays a winning sense of scale, filling some pages with multiple vignettes and others with full bleeds to punctuate the drama. Super fun, with tons to look at and a helpful but understated message, this picture book is ideal for solo readings, where the intricacies of the artwork can be fully appreciated. Wendel might have been a little mouse, but he was a big time inventor. Some of his inventions were fine and dandy like the automatic teapot that would even pour for you, while others like his handy, dandy toaster weren't so hot. Well, perhaps you could say that invention was hot because it spewed out black flaming pieces of toast. Wendel was a passionate inventor and was at it day and night. His housekeeping fell by the wayside until his "workshop became untidier . . . and untidier . . . and UNTIDIER." In other words, it was a big mess.
Wendel decided he really needed to do something about it and, of course, invented a robot named Clunk to tidy up the place. Clunk turned out to be a clunker. He made the bed upside down, folded the clothes into knots, mopped the floor by the handle, and even poured tea in Wendel's rubber boot. The only thing left to do was clunk Clunk. "CLUNK!" Out he went into a scrap heap with the rest of the junk. Inventing a new robot was just the ticket and he Wendel sat at the drawing board creating another one. Wendelbot, the new bot, was just a tad TOO tidy and the next thing you know Wendel was heading down the rubbish chute and onto the scrap heap. Clunk, clunk . . . just how was Wendel going to remedy this situation?
Wendel and his little robot dilemma will make your little ones laugh and wonder just how he's going to get out of trouble. Both the busy, charming story and the bold, vibrant artwork jointly give this tale a sense of adventure with a big dollop of fun thrown in the mix. This book will have especial appeal to those little ones who enjoy imaginary play or are wild about anything "robot." The "untidy" aspect has a lot of chuckle appeal and youngsters will love it as well. If you want an uncommonly fun, inventive tale, this is one you might want to consider! |
