Overview / 简介: |
A tiny squeeze is all it takes. With this simple action you can turn a frown into a smile and show that you care. One hug can mean everything, so hug your mom, hug your dad, hug your sister or your brother, and hug your friend.
Eileen Spinelli and Dan Andreasen create a sweet, simple, and poetic picture book about the power of a loving hug that is a sure bet to brighten your day—just like a hug.

PreSchool-Grade 1—An ode to the power of the hug, this simple rhyming story commands readers to start embracing. "Hug your pillow./Hug your pet./Hug the mailman—/don't forget." Cartoon illustrations feature doll-like characters with button noses and wide round eyes that give them a permanently shocked appearance. The buoyant verses suggest that just hugging the local grouch will set him off on his own hugging campaign. Rounded figures in sugary pictures paired with a sentimental text make the book cloying overall. The singsong rhymes will work with preschoolers, while beginning readers can manage the simple words and sentences on their own. However, the book closes with a challenge to "Hug the whole wide world…or try." This concept may sound noble, but encouraging young children to hug strangers such as the mailman, a firefighter, or a clown can be a risky idea.—Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA

Hugs are very special things. Hugs always seem to make you feel really comfy and warm inside. Ooooh, very comfy indeed! The smiling little girl hugs her baby brother, the cook who just made bacon and eggs, she hugged a painting and even cuddled a book. There are lots of people and things in need of a hug now and then.
"Hug your friend
who's feeling blue.
Hug the firefighter, too.
Hug a teacher.
Hug a bear.
Hug the girl
who cuts your
hair."
The theme and poetic lilt of this story will endear this book to many children, perhaps even more to the reader. This book "about the power of a loving hug" is just the ticket when a little one is needing a little bit of extra loving or attention. Grab the teddy bear, head for the rocking chair and be prepared to read this one at bedtime every night for a while. It's sure to be a big hit with your little hugger! |
