| Kindergarten-Grade 2—This whimsical tale of an everyday hero has a rhyming text and lively illustrations. Grandpappy has superpowers when he "snippy snappies" his suspenders. He can work his magic to make breakfast or clean the house, or for bigger stuff. He can get the cows unstuck from the muck ("Boing-a-moing-a-moooo") and give a snap to get the mail train back on the track ("Boing-a-choing-a-chooooo"). Alas, his suspenders lose their elasticity just as Grandmammy needs to be rescued from some ambitious crows lifting her into the air. Despite his droopy suspenders, Grandpappy leaps to the rescue and promptly loses his trousers. "Smoochy-smacky-smoooooooooooooooo," his lightning-bolt-patterned bloomers have the same effect as his suspenders, and his lovely wife is saved. Plourde's text, which uses different fonts, sizes, and placements, works well once readers get the right cadence. Santoro's digital mixed-media illustrations animate the tale in a wonderful way. | Grandpappy has a pair of snippy-snappy-snoo suspenders that almost have magical powers. Every time he needs something done, snippy snappy, it's done! Just look what he can do in the kitchen in the morning. With one little snippy snap the bread is going into the toaster, the coffee is being poured the bacon and eggs are cooking, the orange juice is being poured and that lucky little pup is getting some dog treats. It doesn't seem like things can get better than that until Grandpappy heard a few wayward cows outside. "MOO! MOO! It looks like they are stuck in some muck. What do you think he did? Snippy snap. It soon was "raining milk from Kansas City to Kalamazoo.

What those suspenders can do!"
He got the sheriff's car unstuck, a little snap and the housework was done, he saved the day when train was derailed, but wait . . . his suspenders got the "droopy draggies" and "a flock of crows [took] Grandmammy by the dress" and started to fly away. What on Earth was he going to do now that his suspenders had the "droopy draggies?"
This is a ZANY tale that kids with big imaginations are going to love! It's very silly and if you are an expressive reader this tale will be a big hit with your little one or children gathered around for circle or story time. The art work is very, very expressive, busy and bright. Snippy-snappy-snoo . . . this story might be just the one for you! |
