Grade 3-8-- Each book clearly discusses the title subject and gives a number of examples, including less familiar species such as meercats, groove-billed anis, and titi monkeys. Readers get a sense of the entire spectrum of the topic from the birds, insects, fish, and mammals mentioned. Animal Defenses is particularly intriguing as it covers forms of deception as well as fighting back; Animal Societies defines such structures and gives reasons for their existence, as well as why some creatures live alone. Approximately ten words in each book make it into the glossary; the rest are defined in context. All the volumes have clear, full-color photos that expand upon the text. Cherfas tries to end each title with a general statement, but some are simplistic: ``The best defense then is to avoid a fight unless you have a good chance of winning.'' There are minor errors, such as an incorrect reference to a previous page. These will be popular with children wanting general information, but not useful for those doing research about any particular animal. Interesting, but of somewhat limited use. |
