| Kindergarten-Grade 3-"The toughest teacher in town," from Attack of the 50-Foot Teacher (Holt, 2000), returns. This time Miss Birmbaum is making her students work the day before the last day of school. She stays late to decorate the classroom and prepare treats for a surprise celebration. A party game is "pin the verb on the noun" and treats are prune pudding, kidney bean cookies, and brussels sprout juice. In the cafeteria kitchen, Miss Birmbaum falls into her treats and discovers she is shrinking. After spending the night running on the pet hamster's exercise wheel, she escapes when the animal falls asleep. Students find her stuck on top of a cupcake that has fallen out of a child's lunch bag. She returns to normal size after eating a lick of chocolate icing, and then orders pizza and cake for the party. It is a bit far-fetched to believe that her shrinking experience made this out-of-touch adult know "what it's like to be little!" but it won't bother children. The boldly colorful and comical watercolor illustrations will draw giggles all around as the humorless woman gets her comeuppance.
