This book presents some good information about earthquakes in general, cites some specific examples, and has a couple nice maps. The writing throughout the book was lackluster in my opinion and seemed awkward in its attempt to speak down at the child's level. There are several real people introduced, presumably for the purpose of making the book more interesting, but it comes across as rather forced and contrived. There is a lot of good information presented, but I just didn't find it very engaging in its presentation. Most of the illustrations are also just okay. The pages are very white with illustrations that tend to be rather drab in the color choices. They serve a function, but they're lackluster.
If you had a choice between this book for your child or no book on earthquakes, then by all means use this book. And, I will keep this book on hand as a secondary book on earthquakes, mainly because of a couple very nice maps such as one showing the relative earthquake danger throughout the United States. But, my primary book on earthquakes for the elementary crowd will be Earthquakes by Franklyn M. Branley. It has much more interesting text and vibrant illustrations |
