From Organization /
PreSchool-Grade 2 A delightful picture book, perfect for both independent reading pleasure and for telling aloud. The Little Old Lady. . . is a clever reworking of the classic story of a ghostly body that appears bit by bit (see ``What's the Matter'' in Maria Leach's Whistle in the Graveyard Viking, 1974 ). The humor of the little old lady's fearless attitude and her clever solution as to what to do with the lively shoes, pants, shirt, pumpkin head, etc., that are chasing her, will enchant young audiences. The catchy refrain never falters, and the rhythmic repeated sounds made by each of the woman's pursuers are sure to appeal to children. Lloyd's brilliantly-colored, detailed folk art-style illustrations are a perfect complement to the text. A great purchase for Halloween or any time of the year, and a must for both school and public libraries.

Foreign Customer Review /
At last! The rare Halloween children's classic! Every Halloween seems to bring a rash of holiday centered picture books. Some are okay and most are simply terrible. This Halloween, I ask that you consider a story where the word "Halloween" never even enters the text. In "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" we read a story that has all the markings of a classic folktale. As a little old lady makes her way home through a dark and scary forest, she comes across a pair of old shoes that walk all by themselves. Assuring the shoes that she is not afraid of them, she next comes across a floating pair of pants. A shirt follows the pants, gloves and hat follow the shirt, and finally a huge scary pumpkin head follows them all. In the end the brave little old lady finds a use for the floating objects and everyone ends happily. The book conjures up images of other pop culture touchstones where clothing floats all of its own accord. The well-known "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" for example. And like "Bedknobs", the clothes in this story are definitely malevolent. Stalking the nice old lady through the woods, each article has its own specific sounds. The boots go "CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP", the shirt goes, "SHAKE SHAKE", and the pants (for reasons best left to the author) go, "WIGGLE WIGGLE". As the number of objects increase, the number of sounds increase as well. A good oral reading of this story will give each sound a scary touch to drill the point home. The illustrations accompanying the story are rather nice. They are equally adept at displaying the old lady's grey skied country home as they are the dark bleak autumnal night where she meets the frightening accoutrements. It's a great story with a rousing plot. Anyone familiar with fall in the countryside (and anyone who just loves Halloween in general) will enjoy this great old-fashioned book.

Tips on voices and body movements
Shoes: The shoes go clomp clomp. When I say the clomp clomp, I lower my voice and elongate the words, like “clooooomp, cloooooomp”. At the same time, I stomp my own feet and encourage the child(ren) to do the same.
Pants: The pants go wiggle wiggle. When I say the wiggle wiggle, I speak in a slightly higher voice. At the same time, wiggle my whole body.
Shirt: The shirt goes shake shake. When I say the shake shake I say it quickly. At the same time I shake out my arms (like shaking out clothes from the dryer).
Gloves: The gloves go clap clap. When I say clap clap I kind of sound like a duck (I don’t know why I picked that voice! HA!). At the same time I clap my hands.
Hat: The hat goes nod nod. When I say nod nod I use another deeper voice. At the same time I….wait for it….wait for it…..Nod. My. Head! I know, I know….didn’t expect that one, did ya?
Pumpkin Head: The head says boo boo. When I say the boo boo I usually say it louder, and short. Rather than a body movement, I make a surprised face, like I am a little scared.
