| This rhyming, cumulative text about young animals getting ready to sleep is patterned after the Little Red Hen: “Down, down goes the sun, / And down in the sea, / Fish find a safe place to hide. / Who’s asleep? / ‘Not I,’ says the minnow.” The turtles, ducklings, bees, cats, birds, and caterpillars respond likewise. Sharp eyes will notice visual clues of a toddler’s chin and hand in the water in the first spread and his feet in the water and red sneakers on the ground in the next. | Deep down under the ocean waters all the sea creatures are fast asleep, save one small, determined minnow who shouts, "Not I." In a pond the ducks have quietly nestled their beaks under their wings and have closed their eyes. Wait, there is a wide-eyed ducking who isn't planning on sleeping. There are many creatures and youngsters who enjoy staying awake when everyone else is fast asleep. The birds, cats, caterpillars, and sheep are determined to stay awake. "Not I," they say, "Not I."
In the branches of a leafy tree
Near the garden
Near the grass
Near the pond by the sea,
Birds nestle in their nests.
Who's asleep?
"Not I," says the baby jay.
This is an adorable book that your little sleepyhead might want you to read time and time again. I liked the theme of one little animal in each and every gaggle, herd, nest or gathering of animals or insects who just wasn't at all sleepy. This is one theme that will resonate in households who always have a little one who is wide awake when everyone is ready to turn in. The artwork is vibrant, peppy, and sure to please. My favorite scene was the "sweet little lamb," a youngster, once determined to stay awake, who has finally drifted off to sleep and is sucking his thumb. This is one cute little book that you might wish to consider adding to your little one's night stand! |
