A young girl helps Mommy dress up for an evening out.

A young girl is excited by her mother's bustling activity, until she realizes Mommy is going out for the evening without her. Still, mommies take a lot of getting ready before they go, and this mommy needs an extra special helper to make those crucial dress-up decisions.
Before long, mother and daughter are caught up in a whirlwind of bubble baths and cold creams, strappy shoes and fancy dresses. Each step of preparation comes with its own smells and sounds and textures and colors, all leading to the most important decision of all: which lipstick to wear? After all, these bright red kisses hold the promise of Mommy's return and she does always come home after a great night out.
Teresa Toten has created a textured tale attired in rhyming text, satiny sounds, and brilliant images. Together with Deirdre Betteridge's richly colored and flowing illustrations, Bright Red Kisses perfectly captures a child's perspective of this grown-up ritual.

| PreS-K. This flurry of words and pictures captures the excitement of Mommy getting ready to go out for an evening. The pigtailed narrator first notices that "the air is full of tickles." She thinks there is going to be a party at her house. Then she realizes that Mom is going out. But the mother, in a robe and with her hair in a ponytail, reminds the child that she is Mommy's helper. And boy does the child roll into action, running the bath, "waking and shaking up" the party dresses in the back of the closet, spraying "pillowly" clouds of perfume, and finally picking out the reddest lipstick--just perfect for bright red kisses. The whimsical watercolor figures waft across pages decorated with the embellishments of the sparkling evening: shoes, makeup, bubbles overspilling a bath. Mothers who are going out for the evening will like having this captivating volume on hand. Ilene Cooper

| Teresa Toten is a children's book reviewer and critically acclaimed young adult novelist. This is her first picture book. She lives in Toronto.
Deirdre Betteridge has illustrated many books for children including 38 Ways to Entertain Your Grandparents. She also works as a graphic designer and art director. Deirdre lives near Toronto.
