| My 1st-grader was actually eager to read this aloud to me, and she normally considers reading to be a drudge because it's still challenging enough to be intimidating and frustrating to her. However, she was able to read almost every word by herself and, because she loves the Little Critter books, it kept her attention. The story was long enough for her to feel a real sense of accomplishment, but she didn't start to feel like she'd had enough until we were just a couple of pages from the end, anyway, and it didn't take any effort to coax her into finishing. (A lot of easy-reading books, like Dr Seuss, are just too long for her, even if the text is appropriate.)
Anyway, we both enjoyed the story a lot, and it was a great choice for a beginning reader.
