| My three-year-old picked this out at the library, and I was very pleasantly surprised by it. There is an actual storyline: Barbie and her friend Teresa are getting ready for the grand opening of their pet shop. We meet several different kinds of pets (puppies, kittens, hamsters, fish), and the illustrations give great opportunities to talk about even more things relating to these animals than are covered in the text: the hamsters have tunnels to play in, Barbie is giving the fish fish food, etc. There's also a grooming station in their pet shop. Barbie, of course, is the star of the book, but Teresa -- who has dark hair and tan skin -- is a very strong character, too. There is a lot of pink in the illustrations of this book, which are bright and cheerful -- and this is likely something that also appeals to my three-year-old girl. The story is bright and chirpy -- but not so much that it drives a parent nuts. Since our copy came from the library, there were no fuzzy stickers included, but I enjoy reading this book enough (over and over and over again to a little girl who loves animals) that it sent me to Amazon to check into other Barbie "picturebacks." The Barbie in this book wears no skimpy clothes, and is a nice role model -- although she does go in for the occasional cutesy phrase that might bother some parents ("good 'mews'; "absolutely purr-fect"). It's also nice that there are no toy product tie-ins found in the book itself. |
