Kindergarten-Grade 2—Children will love this silly story about an adorable hamster who tries to make herself more popular. It is disheartening to live at Hamster World awaiting adoption and never be chosen. Harriet and her sister Patricia have watched their friends leave and Harriet feels she needs to do something to be noticed. She finds a magazine page on the bottom of her cage with ideas on how to go from "hamster to glamster" and decides to give herself a makeover. She uses High Gloss-and-Glo Fur Volumizer, makes a hat out of scraps of colorful paper, and adds whisker extensions for herself and her sleeping sister. Patricia turns out to be the voice of reason, helping Harriet to return to her natural beauty, just in time to catch a little girl's attention. The animals' cooperation and loving behavior are the winning elements. The story is filled with clever details and laugh-out-loud humor, but the underlying message of self-acceptance is an important one for children to hear. Unquestionably, libraries or classrooms with pet hamsters will want to purchase this title for their collections, but don't overlook its use as a starting point for discussions about popularity and love.—Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME |
Foreign Customer Review / 国外客户评价: |
Harriet the hamster and her sister, Patricia, were the last two of their family still unadopted at Hamster World. The night before the big sale, Harriet reads an article about doing a fashion makeover, and, after taking the quiz "Rate your Glamster Potential," sets to work on herself. After Patricia wakes, Harriet shows off her new look, but doesn't get the response she expected. A kind and cautionary story for young girls who might feel too pressured to change themselves to meet societies standards. The art is colorful, friendly and the story has many evenings of re-reading potential. |
