Bear’s life by the sea was quiet and peaceful. But the sounds of the nearby city call to him, and he must go exploring. Buying the ticket and traveling on a train (chuffy chuff chuffy chuff, chuffy chuffity chuff) is all very exciting, but eventually, Bear just wants to go home. Luckily, four friends are there to show him the way.
Rosen’s spare lyrical text lends itself to board-book format, just right for reading aloud with the littlest members of the family. Like Bear, they’re beginning to explore—but feel most comfortable snug at home.

| In spare, lilting text, a cuddly-looking bear sings to himself as he plays in the waves: "I walk by the sea. / By the sea? / By the sea! / And I play in the waves all day." When the sounds of the city call him, he takes the train, only to find city people rushing around, cars whooshing by, and market vendors shouting. So he runs away to the park where some children find him and take him home "To play in the waves" and "to sing together all day." The simple story line is enlivened by the call-and-response device, and engaging word sounds invite reader participation in a way reminiscent of Rosen's We're Going on a Bear Hunt (1989). The vivid colors exude warmth, and the full-of-life figures capture the whimsical playfulness of the words. "Doo bee doo, bee doodily doo," this is fun through and through. Cummins, Julie |

| This is my 10 month old daughter's favorite book. She loves the bright illustrations and repetitive, sing-song story. In fact, when she wrestles and cries during diaper changes, I just recite some of this story to her and she is instantly calm, listening to me.
I don't agree that it is either sad or scary, because although the bear decides the city is not for him, he makes new friends who help him. Maybe it's different for a preschooler, though. |
