雪花一片一片落了下来。
小田鼠们都窝在洞里睡着了；
森林里的大熊彼此靠在一起，也睡着了；
蜗牛爬满树木的夹缝，躲在里面偷偷地打着瞌睡；
还有还有，
树上的松鼠，地上的地鼠，也都一只只地沉沉睡去。
大家睡得又香又甜，一整个冬天。
咦，是谁睁开了眼睛？
谁的鼻子又在那儿嗅来嗅去的？
田鼠的鼻子在空气中嗅啊嗅的，
大熊抬起鼻子嗅啊嗅的，
蜗牛们伸展着触角，
还有还有，
树上的松鼠，地上的地鼠们，也嗅啊嗅的。
它们嗅着嗅着，
跑了起来。
田鼠在奔跑，
大熊在奔跑，
蜗牛也爬得好快好快，
还有还有，
树上的松鼠，从树上跑了下来，
地上的地鼠，从地底窜了出来，
它们嗅着，跑着，
跑着，嗅着，
嗅着、跑着，
它们停了下来，
笑了。
大家都笑了，
开心地跳起舞来，
说：
哇呜！雪地上开了一朵小黄花呢！

| A short children's book about animals hibernating in the winter yet who come out to see a happy sight, a flower growing in the middle of the snow. Spring must be near! The book was a 1950 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a children's book. |
