| Grade 1–3—A new approach to an old (but always popular) subject. Each spread is dedicated to a grouping of dinosaurs, for example, the theropods or ornithopods. Colorful, cartoon drawings of dinosaurs from these groups march across the pages along with children of varying race and ethnicity either beside them or on their backs, with the intent of showing the size of the reptiles in relation to the youngsters. Rhyming text follows along with this fictionalized portrayal of dinosaurs parading. A substantial border runs along the bottom of the page naming each dinosaur pictured and revealing facts about it, including where it was discovered and when it got its name. The last page gives characteristics of each group of dinosaurs plus information about how paleontologists name them. | I have a six-year-old grandson who loves dinosaurs, and I think this picture book was written for him. I love so many things about it. It rhymes, which is great for reading aloud to pre-readers. It has facts, for older kids who want to know all the details. The children marching in the parade (yes, there really is a parade) are multi-ethnic, because the dinosaurs came from all over the world, too. I love that! And it goes with my multi-ethnic family. I also love that the marching kids show just how big those dinosaurs really were -- a number one question on the mind of most young dinosaur fans. This is a great "first book about dinosaurs," and is sure to be a favorite in my family. Maybe yours, too! A+++ to author Kelly Milner Halls and illustrator Rick Spears. |
