| PreSchool-Grade 2-- A moonlit ride on a winged horse is the focus of this uneven fantasy. The young narrator, sitting on the porch with her sleeping father on a warm summer night, wishes on a star, and the Moonhorse arrives to carry her on a journey through the stars. Osborne's prose is generally smooth and lyrical but suffers from occasional awkwardness that mars the rhythm. The pace of the text is also weakened by its varied placement on the pages, leading readers to pause mid-sentence when there are visible gaps between phrases. Saelig's illustrations, on the other hand, are consistently ethereal and evocative, and do much to strengthen the book's appeal. Somber colors and softened edges convey mood and atmosphere while also depicting the night-time world in a semi-realistic fashion. Particularly strong images appear when the narrator names the various constellations she and the Moonhorse fly past. Unfortunately, the plot is slight, and easily overshadowed by the dramatic paintings. Still, Saelig's art is bound to engage both children and adults, making it possible for this work to gain an appreciative audience despite its flaws. --Lisa Dennis, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

| It seems that I often go through my child's books and think, great story but illustrations are mediocre at best - or brilliant artwork for an odd story. Moonhorse is absolutely the most beautifully compatible blend of imaginative work of author and artist. To read this book is to recall a mysterious, yet delightful dream of my 1950's early childhood. I want to know how Pope Osborne and Saelig came together to do this and will they do 1,000 more? |
About the Author / 作者介绍: |
| * Mary Pope Osborne grew up in the military, and by the time she was
fifteen had lived in Oklahoma, Austria, Florida and four different army posts
in Virginia and North Carolina.
* After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in
the early 1970's, Mary traveled all over Europe, and spent the first six weeks
of her trip living in a cave on the island of Crete. She then joined up with a
group of European young people and traveled in rickety vans through sixteen
Asian countries, including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
* She was a bartender, an acting teacher, a waitress, a travel agent, a
window dresser, and a medical assistant -- all before becoming an author! Now
she is the author of many highly acclaimed picture books, early chapter books,
middle-grade biographies, and young adult novels.
* In February 1993, Mary was elected the 27th president of the Author's
Guild, the oldest, most established organization for writers in the United
States.
* Mary her husband Will spilt their time between an apartment in Greenwich
Village, New York and a cabin in Pennsylvania. They own a terrier named
Bailey, who sleeps on the top of Mary's desk every day while she writes!
