“A young narrator praises his mother for such maternal deeds as knowing when to change his diaper when he was a baby, baking ‘the best’ cookies, and serving a warm breakfast when it’s cold out. More diverting are revelations of her spunkiness: she teaches him to dance the polka, takes him to school in grandfather’s antique truck, and shows kids how to write their initials in the air with sparklers. Pastel borders frame spare, warm portraits of mother and son: as the mother faces readers, fresh Popsicles at the ready, she resembles no less than a modern-day saint.” |

A mother held her little boy aloft and smiled at him. Of course he knew even as a baby that his "mother was smart." She knew how to do all kinds of things like changing diapers, she knew exactly when he needed a bottle, and when he got older she could "make the best cookies." Mmmmm! She was handy at making things to eat and drink and even taught all the boys and girls in the neighborhood how to sing songs like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
There were exiting times like the Fourth of July when it got dark and she showed all the children how to draw their initials in the darkened sky with sparklers. Tomie's mother was so smart she knew just what to feed a boy on a cold day or how to create that perfect Halloween costume. The feathers and beak on the bird costume were just perfect. The house came alive with her Christmas decorations in December too. Mothers are very smart, but his was extra special smart. There was one thing she could do so well he even bragged about it. Just what could that unusual thing be?
This is a lovely tribute from Tomie DePaola to his mother, a mother who was "so smart" she could do anything. Many little children think their mothers are prettier, more fun, or smarter than anyone else. Tomie was certain that his mother was smarter than all the rest simply by the things she did for him. The artwork is charming, has a nice nostalgic touch to it, and exudes motherly love on every page. One of the most adorable scenes is when he is shown stuffed into a snowsuit strolling "down the sidewalk with [his] brother's galoshes on." This simple story would be a wonderful cuddle up read aloud story for any mother to read to their young child! |
